Why Proper Walkways Matter

Walkways and sidewalks do more than just give people a place to walk. They define the flow of traffic around your El Mirage property, protect your landscaping from foot traffic, and create safe paths between buildings, parking areas, and outdoor living spaces. A well-planned concrete walkway system makes your entire property more functional and accessible.

Safety is the primary concern with any walking surface. Uneven concrete, cracked slabs, and poorly graded surfaces create tripping hazards that can result in serious injuries. For commercial properties, damaged sidewalks are a liability issue that can lead to costly lawsuits. For homeowners, a trip hazard in front of your house puts your family, guests, and delivery people at risk. New, properly installed concrete walkways eliminate these hazards and give everyone a safe, predictable surface to walk on.

Concrete flatwork is the broad category that covers all horizontal concrete work. This includes sidewalks, walkways, curbs, aprons, parking pads, trash enclosure slabs, and any other flat concrete surface. Each of these has specific requirements for thickness, slope, and finish that ensure proper performance. We build all types of flatwork to the standards that apply to each application.

Common Flatwork Projects

  • Front walkways connecting driveways and front doors
  • Side yard walkways for access to backyards and gates
  • Public sidewalks along streets and neighborhood pathways
  • Parking pads and RV slabs for extra vehicle storage
  • Utility and equipment pads for AC units, sheds, and generators

The Installation Process

Walkway installation follows the same fundamental process as any quality concrete work: prepare the ground, set forms, place reinforcement, pour, finish, and cure. However, walkways have some unique considerations. Width needs to be adequate for the intended use. A path that only one person can walk through comfortably is frustrating when two people meet coming from opposite directions. We typically recommend at least 36 inches for residential side yards and 48 inches or more for front walkways and main paths.

Grading and drainage are critical for walkways. Water should never pool on a walking surface. We grade all walkways with a slight cross slope so water runs off to one side. Longer walkways also need proper longitudinal slope to direct water toward drains or landscaped areas. In El Mirage, monsoon rains can dump a lot of water quickly, so getting the drainage right prevents both standing water and erosion along the walkway edges.

Joints are placed at regular intervals along walkways to control cracking. For a standard four-foot wide walkway, joints are typically spaced every four to five feet. These joints allow the concrete to expand and contract with temperature changes without developing random cracks. Where walkways connect to other concrete structures like driveways, patios, or building foundations, isolation joints are used to allow independent movement between the two structures.

Finish Options and Upgrades

Standard broom finish is the most common choice for walkways because it provides excellent traction and costs the least. For a more polished look, stamped or decorative concrete walkways add visual appeal to your property. Decorative borders along a plain walkway offer an affordable way to dress up the appearance without the full cost of stamping. Exposed aggregate finishes show off colorful stones and provide natural slip resistance, making them a good choice for pool areas and garden paths.

Replacing Damaged Walkways

Old walkways that have cracked, settled, or been lifted by tree roots are a common project for us. Tree roots are one of the biggest causes of walkway damage in established neighborhoods. The roots grow under the concrete, pushing sections up and creating dangerous lips between slabs. Simply cutting the roots is not always the answer because it can harm the tree and the roots often grow back.

We work with homeowners to find practical solutions for root-damaged walkways. Options include rerouting the walkway around the root zone, installing root barriers to redirect growth, or bridging over roots with a reinforced slab that accommodates some root growth. For sections that just need to be raised back to level, concrete leveling can sometimes solve the problem without removing any concrete.

When walkway replacement is necessary, we remove only the damaged sections rather than tearing out everything. New sections are poured to match the existing walkway as closely as possible in width, thickness, and finish. This approach keeps costs down and minimizes disruption to your property. In cases where the entire walkway is deteriorated, a full replacement with modern design and proper base preparation gives you a fresh surface that will last for decades.
